Esteban Chaves retires

EF Education-EasyPost

Esteban Chaves has announced his retirement from cycling at the age of 35. Chaves has spent over a decade in the professional peloton with most of his time spent riding for iterations of the Jayco-AlUla squad, with whom he won four Grand Tour stages and Il Lombardia, and finished second at the Giro d’Italia and third at the Vuelta a España in 2016. Chaves signed for EF Education-EasyPost in 2022 and won the Colombian Road Race Championship the following season.

‘I am very happy,’ Chaves says, ‘I am very proud of the sporting career I have had. I’m very happy to close this chapter in the way we are closing it. Who am I without my bike? Without the bike, I am Esteban. I am a son, I am a brother, I am a husband, I am a father. I am a human being who dreams of setting an example, who dreams of being at peace, who dreams of having a lot of contact with nature. I am a human being who learns.‘

He was a rider that always wore his heart on his sleeve and a smile plastered on his face.

Israel Premier-Tech rebrand complete

Israel-Premier Tech

Israel-Premier Tech are now officiallly the Swiss-licenced ‘NSN Cycling Team’ following a year marked by protests and culminating in a sponsor-reshuffle. Multiple stages of the Vuelta a España were affected by protests over their inclusion in the race and due to their Israel identity and branding. As a result of rising discontent in the peloton and among race organisers, the team announced a rebrand would be underway and now sports and entertainment agency NSN (Never Say Never) is officially the new face. The agency was co-founded by former Spain and Barcelona football player Andrés Iniesta and is backed by Swiss investment firm Stoneweg.

Title sponsor Premier Tech ended its sponsorship despite the identity change, describing it as ‘untenable’ to continue, a phrase echoed by departing rider Derek Gee who terminated his contract in August. Factor has also left the team as bike sponsor and is likely to be replaced by Swiss brand Scott.

Canadian company Premier Tech has announced it will be supporting French team St Michel-Preference Home-Auber93 for the coming season, the new home of Canadian fan favourite Alison Jackson, though thankfully not as a fourth title sponsor.

Lorena Wiebes and Thibaut Guernalec hit by car drivers

SD Worx-Protime’s Lorena Wiebes posted on social media that she was hit by a car driver while out riding her e-bike.

She said, ‘For the person who hit me and didn’t stop… Luckily I’m quite OK but this could be way worse, especially because I got hit from the back. Thanks to the two persons who stopped to check that I’m OK.’

Unfortunately she is not the only rider to endure the same fate recently. Arkéa-B&B Hotels’ Thibault Guernalec was hit by a car driver head-on and sustained fractures to his finger and back in addition to a concussion. In an interview with Le Télégramme, he admitted to not remembering anything, four hours being blank and that he hasn’t quite grasped what happened and that he can walk ‘a little’.

German giant Marcel Kittel has signed a deal to jump on board the Unibet Rose Rockets train as a sprinting coach. Kittel was prolific in his heyday and won 14 stages at the Tour de France, four at the Giro d’Italia and one at the Vuelta a España. He retired in 2019, moving into an analyst role.

It’s a big move for the squad looking to secure a Tour wildcard following big signings in Victor Lafay, Dylan Groenewegen and Wout Poels.

Proskuryakov can request an analysis of his B samples.

Geoffrey Bouchard unretires

Despite announcing his retirement in October, Geoffrey Bouchard has signed for TotalEnergies from 2026. The 33-year-old French rider previously spent his seven years as a professional with Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale and won the mountains classifications at the Vuelta in 2019 and the Giro in 2021.
