Cycling classic Gent-Wevelgem becomes ‘In Flanders Fields’

The 88th edition of Gent-Wevelgem will be held on 29 March 2026, but 139 days before the start organiser Flanders Classics has given the classic race a makeover.

From now on, Gent-Wevelgem will be known as “In Flanders Fields. From Middelkerke to Wevelgem.”

The DNA of Gent-Wevelgem is closely linked to history. The race constantly flirts with the Great War front line. It is no coincidence that in recent years the race has been subtitled ‘In Flanders Fields’.

Middelkerke, where the European Cyclo-cross Championships were held last weekend, takes over from Ieper as the starting point. The contract with Ieper ran until 2025.

‘The race is being completely overhauled,’ laughs Jean-Marie Dedecker, Mayor of Middelkerke.

‘We have signed a 10-year contract. In the publicity world, it takes at least seven years to make a name for yourself. We reap the benefits for another three years and can extend the contract for another 20,’ the mayor added.

Dedecker and Middelkerke did attach one important condition to the changes. ‘Ghent had to be removed from the name, and Middelkerke definitely had to be included.’

‘Cycling is a historically sensitive sport, but support from governments is part of our model,’ adds Tomas Van Den Spiegel, CEO of Flanders Classics. ‘The race is free, cities and municipalities invest.’

‘We were receptive to Middelkerke’s request, but it had to be a long-term commitment. We didn’t want to have to tinker with the race again in three years’ time.’

‘We all quickly agreed. Flanders Fields had been our baseline for years and we want to continue to tell the story of the Great War. So this is a good solution’.
